Flight Path: Birds in Your Backyard

Description Children’s Library is looking for birds! Join us in the Secret Garden to make birdseed ornaments for our trees (and for yours) as we learn how to attract feathered friends to our backyard spaces. As a special part of our monthlong celebration of birds, we will also be christening our recently refurbished birdbath! Originally designed almost nineteen years ago by Susan Dannenfelser and Kirk Beck, the two artists returned to help us restore this beloved piece as part of our renovations at Children’s Library. This program is made possible through grant funding and materials awarded through Flight Path, the first campaign in the new Spark of Science@ My Library initiative. With the goal of sparking curiosity about science and creating a deeper understanding of how science can improve human health and the health of our planet, this initiative is a partnership between the STAR Library Education Network and HHMI Tangled Bank Studios.

Figure Drawing Workshop With Yael Levy

Join Yael Levy for an exciting Figure Drawing workshop!In this workshop, we will practice drawing people and learn some basic tricks to drawing dynamic bodies and faces which will help your characters move more naturally and express their feelings. All levels and ages welcome! Yael is a mixed media artist, storyteller, printmaker, and art teacher based in Berkeley, CA. Yael draws, paints, collages, and writes. Yael often self-publishes their work and sometimes prints and binds it by hand. Yael’s work has been published by The Nib (2018), Birdy Magazine (2019) and Forward Comix (2017 & 2020).
Dance Along the Nile

This interactive program invites children to join Qabila Dance Company and discover the rich diversity of Egyptian culture through the folk dances of the people who live along the Nile River. Spirited dancers from Qabila Dance Company will present lively folk dances from different regions of Egypt. Each region will include a short introduction to the people, what the area is known for, and the folk or social dance connected to it—making history, geography, and culture come alive through movement and music! XFYD Chess Class for Grades 6-8

Designed for middle school students, this class focuses on more advanced chess strategies and tactics. Participants will strengthen critical thinking and teamwork while enjoying a challenging and interactive learning experience. This class series is for students in sixth to eighth grade. This program is presented by our partners at XFYD Bay Area – Milpitas High School and is a 15-part class series. Registration is required and covers all 15 sessions. Registrants who miss the first two sessions will be removed from the program to allow waitlisted students participate. There are no classes on 2/18 or 4/15. The final class is on 5/27. Description Bring your dancing feet to the Mitchell Park Library on Wednesday evenings for Music & Movement with Librarian Celina. Build early literacy skills through movement, songs, and dance. Instruments, songs, and dance moves will all be introduced so that everyone will be able to enjoy moving along to the music. This program is meant for families with children and no previous experience is needed! Every week in April, we will be highlighting a different song from Southwest Asia and North Africa in celebration of SWANA Heritage Month.

Join us for evening Family Storytime in our program room! This storytime series is suitable for all ages and will feature stories, songs, rhymes and dances, all to encourage the development of crucial early literacy skills.
